Amy Shafer recently joined The University of Tennessee Medical Center as exercise specialist of the medical center’s Rehabilitation Services Department. In this role, Shafer will oversee the hospital’s medical and employee fitness programs, where she will help create individualized exercise programs for participants to help them meet their specific fitness goals.
“We are so excited and fortunate to have Amy join our team,” said Brent Pendergast, outpatient clinical manager of rehabilitation services at UT Medical Center. “Amy comes to us with a breadth of knowledge and fresh ideas concerning the field of health and wellness. Her expertise will be a tremendous benefit to both our patients and employees.”
Shafer comes to the medical center from Associated Therapeutics, where she worked for seven years, most recently as fitness manager, handling multiple aspects of marketing and management. She previously worked as exercise physiologist of the community fitness program at Clinton Physical Therapy Center.
“I think this is the perfect opportunity for me, because I’m truly passionate about fitness and overall health and well-being,” Shafer said. “I’m looking forward to reaching out into the community through the medical fitness program. And with all the publicity we’ve seen recently about the obesity problems in Tennessee, I believe the employee fitness program shows that the medical center has a genuine commitment to helping everyone strive for a healthy lifestyle.”
Shafer lives in Karns with her husband, Blake. When she’s not at work, Shafer enjoys multiple outdoor activities and sports, including running, hiking, camping and rock climbing.
Shafer is a graduate of Carson Newman College where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science.
