Healthy Eating: Beat the Heat

Put those oven mitts down! Temperatures are up and summer is on, but your oven doesn’t have to be. From salads to desserts to beverages, the following recipes are sure to beat the heat even in during the hottest months.

 

Summer Food Safety Tips

  • Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Watch for items that will go bad in the heat such as mayonnaise.
  • Cook meat thoroughly.
  • If using a cooler, keep drinks in a separate cooler since that will be opened more often.
  • Do not place cooler in trunk, keep in car.
  • Keep raw and cooked food separately.
  • Never reuse marinades or plates that have been in contact with raw meat.
  • Pack condiments in small containers instead of taking whole jars.
  • Provide plenty of liquids.
  • Wash your hands.
  • Keep bugs away by utilizing covers for food.
  • Refrigerate leftovers as soon as possible.
  • Take along disposable hand wipes.
  • Protect yourself by using sun screen, wearing hats and sunglasses and drinking lots of water!
