Prostate Cancer Screenings Save Lives

Last year hundreds of men were screened for prostate cancer over the course of a four-day period at the University of Tennessee Medical Center’s Cancer Institute. In recognition of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month observed in September, the UT Medical Center’s Cancer Institute will, once again, offer free prostate screenings for men 50 and older and those 45 or older who are African American or who have a family history of prostate cancer.

Over the last 20 years, the 5-year survival rate for prostate cancer has increased from 67 percent to 97 percent for those tumors found in a localized stage. Much of this increase is being attributed to early detection. Prostate screenings include a prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal exam (DRE) performed by a urologist. Screening is not applicable for anyone who has a current or past diagnosis of prostate cancer or has been screened in the last 12 months.
