The University of Tennessee Cancer Institute recently received a donation of books and magazines from students at Sacred Heart Cathedral School in Knoxville. The monthly mission project is dedicated to collecting goods and/or money for a particular group of charity. In recognition of breast cancer awareness month, the project for October was dedicated to providing reading materials for cancer patients, which resulted in approximately seven large boxes of donations.

Cancer survivors are among the faculty, parents and other family members. Cancer patients are likely to have many appointments throughout their treatment and many waiting rooms are in need of new materials, so the school thought it would be good to give the patients a current supply of reading materials.

UT Medical Center’s Cancer Institute was selected along with several other cancer centers in the community. The donated reading materials were distributed in the lobby of the Cancer Institute for the patients and their families.

The school determines each year what the monthly mission projects will be. Although this was a first-time project of this nature for the school, it was so successful that future plans may include another reading material collection.

UT Medical Center and its patients and families thank Sacred Heart Cathedral School and all of the students, faculty and donors that made this donation possible.
