Friday, November 07, 2008

The Atrial Fibrillation Center at The University of Tennessee Medical Center is East Tennessee’s only Atrial Fibrillation Center. It is an initiative of the Heart Lung Vascular Institute that evaluates, manages and provides various treatment options for patients with atrial fibrillation.

The center was established to meet the growing needs of the region’s atrial fibrillation patients by providing the most innovative treatment options, including Mini-Maze, and proven therapies.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of irregular heartbeat affecting more than 2 million people in the United States with more than 300,000 new cases each year. Atrial fibrillation increases the risk of stroke and is a major contributor to the development of congestive heart failure. Atrial fibrillation symptoms include fatigue; heart palpitations; rapid, racing, fluttering or pounding pulse; shortness of breath; breathing difficulty; confusion; fainting; and tightness in the chest. Atrial fibrillation is a serious condition but it can be treated and even cured.

Atrial Fibrillation Center physicians can help provide treatment options, select which one is best for you and remain in contact with your primary care doctor throughout your treatment.

Patients of the center must have a physician referral.

For more information on the new Atrial Fibrillation Center, speak with your doctor or call 865.246.2230.
