Stroke Program Receives 2008 Bronze Award From Get With the Guidelines in U.S. News & World Report
The University of Tennessee Medical Center received a Bronze Award in U.S. News & World Report titled "America's Best Hospitals." The Knoxville hospital was awarded the 2008 Bronze Award for its stroke program, the first stroke program in the Knoxville region to receive a Primary Stroke Center Certification.
Through community outreach and patient / public education, UT Medical Center drives stroke awareness to East Tennessee residents. The medical center educates the public on the dangers and risks of stroke and how recognizing stroke warning signs could save a life.
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, killing more than 160,000 people each year. Some stroke risk
factors can be controlled (i.e., smoking, blood pressure, diabetes), while others cannot (i.e., age, gender, race, family history). Knowing the warning signs of stroke also can help save a life.
As one of the hospitals named on the list, UT Medical Center takes part in Get With the Guidelines, the quality improvement program from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. Participating hospitals must meet guidelines by promoting the latest evidence-based treatment for patients with coronary artery disease, heart failure and stroke in an effort to improve health and save lives.
