The study suggests that Alzheimer's disease should be effectively treated if not cured by 2025. If we can delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease 3-5 years we can reduce the number of people who are affected by 6-8 million individuals. This is a substantial contribution to the care and treatment of patients with Alzheimer's disease.”
3
The Cole Neuroscience Center in Knoxville, Tennessee is the only Neurology sub-specialty center of its kind in the region, The Cole Neuroscience Center offers a complete spectrum of care for degenerative neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer's Disease.
3
On May 15, 2012, Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services spoke to the plan at the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Summit She unveiled a new website devoted to goals three (3) and four (4).
3
You may read the entire National Plan, here.

Recipients Celebrate Life at the 27th annual Transplant Reunion

In 2011, the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) reported there were 23,745 transplants performed in the United States. Of those transplants, 13,931 were kidney transplants.
3
Medical officials say they are doing their best to get transplants for everyone that's on the waiting list. Doctors say organ donations is a great way to help out those in need.
3
"Anytime you have the opportunity to touch someone's life through organ transplantation and give someone a new kidney or a new pancreas that's an incredible feeling to be a part of," said Chris Wingard, Director of Transplant Services.
3
In November 2010, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded The University of Tennessee Medical Center with the National Medal of Honor for Organ Donation and awarded the Center for Transplant Services the Bronze Award for meeting and exceeding HRSA Standards for Kidney Graft Survival, Transplant Rates and Waitlist Mortality Rates.
The University of Tennessee Medical Center Performs 1,000th Transplant

Recently, The University of Tennessee Medical Center’s Center for Transplant Services performed its 1000th transplant. The surgical team performing the transplant included Dr. Mitchell Goldman, founder of the program, and surgical tech, Kathy Jones, both of whom participated in the first UT Medical Center transplant in 1985. Dr. Oscar Grandas, program director, and Dr. Alex Cantafio also assisted in this surgery.
3
“It is amazing how this program has grown during the past 27 years,” said Dr. Mitchell Goldman, Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the medical center. “We began as a Medicare approved adult kidney program, adding pediatric kidney transplants in 1985 and then in 2005 we began performing adult pancreas transplants.”
3
The 22-year-old patient Ayauna Adams, diagnosed with kidney failure just one year ago, was immediately put on the transplant list and underwent dialysis three-times a week. Dialysis treatments her life changed, making her unable to work as well restricting her diet.
3
“I have another chance at a normal life because I won’t feel tired all of the time and I can eat what I want to eat and go where I want to go,” said Adams. “Everyone should sign their donor card.”
3
The demand for organ transplants far outweighs the supply of available organs.
3
Recently, the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) reported that there are more than 112,700 people waiting in the U.S. for an organ transplant and over 90,000 of them are waiting for a kidney transplant. In Tennessee, there are 2,379 people waiting for an organ transplant with 2,103 of them waiting for a kidney transplant. In 2011, (UNOS) there were 23,745 transplants performed in the United States. Of those transplants, 13,931 were kidney transplants.

A community assessment helps to uncover not only needs and resources, but the underlying culture and social structure that will help us understand how to address the community's health needs and utilize its resources. Community Health Needs Assessments (CHNA) are a tool used to assist the organization in determining their capacity and use of resources by residents.
3
This is your time to tell us what is most important to you and your community. Please take a moment to participate in our brief survey.
3

The Dangers of Indoor Tanning and Melanoma

Despite what members of popular reality shows would have you believe, indoor tanning can be deadly. Many 20 to 30 year old young adults are now at risk for developing melanoma. The prime culprit –indoor tanning. People who first use a tanning bed before the age of 35 increases their risk for melanoma by 75%.
3
Published in a recent study, melanoma incidence is now six times higher among young adults than it was 40 years ago. Moreover, women under the age of 40 have an 8-fold increase of melanoma while men have a 4-fold increase. The study corroborated the rapid increase in melanoma cases observed. Most of the melanomas that were found in the study were on the lower extremities and on the back.
3
" In our culture, beauty and tans go together and it actually is deadly," said Dr. James Lewis, a surgical oncologist at University of Tennessee Medical Center Cancer Institute during a recent CBS news interview. The study disputes tanning salon owners' and operators' frequent claims that sunbeds offer health benefits because they provide a "base tan" that helps avoid sunburn. “There is no such thing as a safe tan," declares Dr. Lewis. “ A tan is actually your body's defense mechanism against UV exposure. It's producing melanin as DNA in the skin cells are damaged by the sun's rays.”
3
Although the Indoor Tanning Association has responded by saying "there is no consensus among researchers regarding the relationship between melanoma skin cancer and UV exposure either from the sun or a sun bed”, the World Health Organization has put tanning beds right up there with smoking and even plutonium "as a cause of cancer." To learn more about melanoma and skin cancer, click here.
3
The University of Tennessee Medical Center will be holding a skin cancer educational presentation and free screenings on May 15th University of Tennessee Medical Center-Heart Hospital Conference Room at 6pm.
3
To register for this event or for more information on prevention, early detection or treatment of skin cancer, contact 865-305-8577.
3
Read why tanning beds might hurt you.

Additional recommended screenings include either a fiberoptic flexible sigmoidoscopy every five years or a colonoscopy every 10 years (or as recommended, based on the results of your first colonoscopy). A colonoscopy is the recommended screening tool to detect colon cancer. To schedule a screening at UT Medical Center, call (865) 305-6570.
3
There are no symptoms during the early stages of colon cancer, but symptoms during later stages include:
3
3
Change in bowel habits
3
Diarrhea, constipation or feeling that the bowel does not completely empty
3
Blood in the stool
3
Stools that are narrower than usual
3
Abdominal discomfort (frequent gas pains, bloating, fullness and cramps)
3
Unexplained weight loss
3
Constant tiredness
3
Nausea and vomiting
3
3
Most often, these symptoms are not due to cancer and can be caused by other health conditions. Anyone with these symptoms, however, should see a doctor so potential problems can be diagnosed and treated early.
3
“Colorectal cancer can be prevented in many instances through lifestyle modification and the removal of polyps found during screening colonoscopy,” said Dr. James McLoughlin, a surgical oncologist at UT Medical Center’s Cancer Institute. “Even more importantly, when colon or rectal cancer is detected early, long-term survival can be reached in 90 percent of people.”

The students raised the money by selling “Movin’ to a Cure One Step at a Time” t-shirts designed by the school’s HOSA vice president and junior, Courtney Osborne.
3
“We wanted a project where we could raise money and help meet the need for early detection,” said Jennifer Estes, RN, the HOSA advisor at McMinn Central High School in Englewood, TN. “Early detection is so very important.”
3
BHOP at the University of Tennessee Medical Center educates area women in 21 rural and remote counties in eastern Tennessee and refers them to low-cost or free mammograms and clinical breast exams in their own communities. The vital program also provides free comprehensive education programs emphasizing the importance of the early detection of breast cancer. Since 1996, nearly 27,000 women have been educated or screened through the BHOP program. BHOP has been providing free education classes and mobile mammography screening in McMinn County since 2003.
3
“BHOP’s major focus is to provide information about the importance of early detection of breast cancer along with access to digital screening mammograms and clinical breast exams on our state-of-the-art mobile mammography unit,” said Renee Hawk, vice president for UT Medical Center Cancer Institute. “As a vital resource to the East Tennessee community, BHOP relies solely on support from grants and donations like the one given today to continue its mission of community outreach. We truly appreciate these students and Ms. Estes for not only their generous donation, but also for raising awareness.”
3
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women in the United States, and the leading single cause of death overall in women between the ages of 40 and 55. According to the American Cancer Society, 5,020 new cases of breast cancer will be detected in Tennessee this year and 890 lives will be lost to the disease. While advances have been made in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure, early detection still affords the best opportunity for successful treatment. Programs such as UT Medical Center’s BHOP help ensure that all women have access to early detection information and options, even poor and medically underserved women.
3
To schedule and appointment, or for more information on the medical center's Breast Health Outreach Program, please call 865-305-9753.

Medical Center Physician Comments on Surgeon General’s Report Findings on Tobacco Use

According to the American Cancer Society, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Office of the Surgeon General released their 31st report on tobacco use last week. The report, titled Preventing Tobacco Use Among Youth and Young Adults, includes updated information about youth tobacco use trends and patterns, its health effects, the influence marketing by the tobacco industry has on youth initiation and prevalence, and efforts that must be implemented in order to curb these trends.
3
The report underscores the need to deter children and adults from smoking. It confirms that a multi-pronged approach that includes the following steps is effective in curbing tobacco use:
3
* Increasing tobacco taxes to encourage smokers to quit and discourage those who don’t from starting.
3
* Passing comprehensive smoke-free legislation that includes all bars, restaurants, and workplaces.
3
* Adequately funding state cancer prevention and tobacco cessation programs.
3
A UT Medical Center cardiothoracic surgeon, Thomas E. Gaines, MD, comments on the effects of smoking on young adults. "Smoking tobacco is highly addictive. Its effects are cumulative. Even though it may not feel to young people trying out cigarettes that a decision to smoke at that moment may ultimately cause them untold misery and premature death, that is exactly what is happening. Too many suffering people look back with profound regret on a decision made years before when they lacked the judgment and experience to avoid being hooked by this terrible habit. Clearly the best time to quit is before you start. Any reasonable measure that holds the promise of discouraging those who would become smokers from taking up the habit or, having started, to quit as quickly as possible is to be supported. These proposals offer a multi-pronged approach that is likely to be well worth the cost."
3
The report also notes that tobacco advertising is directly linked to encouraging youth tobacco use. The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) believes that strong implementation of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act is critical to curtailing the marketing of tobacco products to youth. ACS CAN is leading the fight to reduce suffering from tobacco-related illnesses with a nationwide strategy to pass laws proven to help smokers quit and prevent nonsmokers from ever starting.
3
The University of Tennessee Medical Center is a tobacco-free workplace. This extends to all patients, families and visitors both inside and on the grounds of the hospitals. Regarding tobacco usage, hospital leaders believe the outright prohibition of the use of all tobacco products on their campuses is the best process for the health of all who visit their facilities. Additionally, they believe the ban presents an ideal opportunity for the sharing of critical education to all members of the community regarding the health risks associated with smoking and tobacco usage.
3
A copy of the report is available on the Surgeon General’s Web site.
3
Additional Resources:
3
Making the decision to stop smoking
3
Tips on how to quit smoking
3
Smoking Cessation Classes

This community-wide health fair brings free health screenings and health information to those who need it the most.
3
The event is created by 100 Black Men of Greater Knoxville, Inc. and sponsored by The University of Tennessee Medical Center, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee Community Trust, Tennova and United Healthcare Community Plan. Organizers stress that everyone, regardless of age, race or gender, is encouraged to attend.
3
“This health expo is one of our most important events of the 100 Black Men of Greater Knoxville because we want to bring resources to those who either can’t or don’t seek needed medical attention,” said Bernard Bradley, health and wellness chair of 100 Black Men of Greater Knoxville. “Our theme 'Your Health is in Your Hands' is a true statement. We have to care for ourselves and this expo is just the place to start. This is the perfect opportunity for everyone in the community to get free screenings and health information. We hope the community responds with a great turn out!”
3
Bradley attributed the event’s success to the teamwork and commitment to community health by 100 Black Men of Greater Knoxville and the multiple health systems and health providers in Knoxville who participate in the expo each year.
3
“This is a very important health fair screening event for the underserved community,” said Dr. Bedford Waters, a urologist at UT Medical Center who will provide prostate cancer screenings during the event. “Prostate cancer has a higher incidence and mortality in African-American men. Men who are forty years of age, who are informed of the risk and benefits of screening and have a life expectancy of at least 10 years without significant medical morbidity are candidates for prostate screening at this event. The screening will consist of a prostate exam and a blood test for prostate specific antigen, or PSA.”
3
Light refreshments will be available and organizers will hold multiple drawings for gift cards throughout the event. Parking at the YMCA is free. The following health screenings and information will be available during The Knoxville 100 Health Expo:
3
3
Prostate cancer screenings
3
Blood pressure screenings
3
HIV testing
3
Affordable medical options for seniors
3
Bone density
3
Sickle Cell Anemia
3
Ask-a-doctor
3
Ask-a-dentist
3
Cardiac rhythm interpretation
3
Body fat testing
3
Comfort/palliative care
3
Peripheral artery disease screening
3
Kidney health
3
Pulse oximetry
3
Grip strength testing
3
3
In addition to the sponsoring agencies, partnering organizations include Rural/Metro Corporation, YMCA of Knoxville, Knox County Health Department, Cherokee Health Systems, Knoxville-Knox County CAC, University of Tennessee Extension Office, Smoky Mountain Home Health and Hospice, Inc. and Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

The Avon Breast Health Outreach Program has awarded a $65,000 one-year grant to the Breast Health Outreach Program (BHOP) at The University of Tennessee Medical Center Cancer Institute to increase awareness of the life-saving benefits of early detection of breast cancer. It is the tenth year that the program has received funding from the Avon Foundation for Women to support its work on this important health issue, and in recognition of the program’s excellence.
3
BHOP at the University of Tennessee Medical Center will educate area women in 21 rural and remote counties in eastern Tennessee and refer them to low-cost or free mammograms and clinical breast exams in their own communities. The vital program will also provide free comprehensive education programs emphasizing the importance of the early detection of breast cancer.
3
Since 1996, nearly 27,000 education and/or screening contacts have been completed by BHOP at the UT Medical Center Cancer Institute. Our major focus is to provide information about the importance of early detection of breast cancer along with access to digital screening mammograms and clinical breast exams on our state-of-the-art mobile mammography unit.
3
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women in the United States, and the leading single cause of death overall in women between the ages of 40 and 55. According to the American Cancer Society, 5,020 new cases of breast cancer will be detected in Tennessee this year and 890 lives will be lost. Nationwide, there is a new diagnosis every three minutes and a death from breast cancer every 14 minutes. While advances have been made in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure, early detection still affords the best opportunity for successful treatment. Programs such as the Medical Center’s BHOP help ensure that all women have access to early detection information and options, even poor and medically underserved women.
3
“Many factors, such as fear, keep women from practicing good breast health,” says Dr. John L. Bell, director of the Cancer Institute at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. “There is a tremendous need to reach women with information and resources,” adds Bell.
3
“We are proud that the Avon Foundation for Women shares our mission and has chosen to support our program.
3
Since 1993, the Avon Foundation has awarded more than 1,550 grants to community-based breast health programs across the United States, including the Breast Health Outreach Program at the UT Medical Center Cancer Institute. These programs are dedicated to educating underserved women about breast cancer and linking them to early detection screening services.
3
The Avon Foundation for Women and Breast Cancer Crusade

3
The Avon Foundation for Women, an accredited 501(c)(3) public charity, was founded in 1955 to improve the lives of women and today is the world’s largest corporate-affiliated philanthropy focused on issues that matter most to women. The Avon Breast Cancer Crusade, which observes its 20th anniversary in 2012, has placed Avon at the forefront of the fight against breast cancer; today, Avon is the leading corporate supporter of the cause globally. In the 20 years since the Crusade’s launch, Avon breast cancer programs in 58 countries have donated more than $740 million for research and advancing access to care, regardless of a person’s ability to pay. Avon raises funds for the Crusade through the sale of Avon “Pink Ribbon” products, and through events and walks, such as the U.S. Avon Walk for Breast Cancer series, which is the Foundation’s largest fund-raising source.
3
The Avon Breast Health Outreach Program
3
The Avon Breast Health Outreach Program is administered by Cicatelli Associates Inc. to support community-based, non-profit breast health programs across the country. The Fund's National Advisory Board selected the Breast Health Outreach Program at The University of Tennessee Medical Center as one of 120 new grant recipients nationwide in the 2012 cycle of Avon Breast Health Outreach Program grants. These organizations were chosen based on their ability to effectively reach women, particularly minority, low-income, and older women, who are often medically underserved.

Medical Librarians to Travel to South Africa to Expand Access to Health Information

Medical librarians from the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine travel to South Africa later this month to train public librarians there how to find the best online health information available to share with families in their communities. The trip for the librarians with Preston Medical Library at The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville is sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in South Africa in partnership with the Library and Information Association of South Africa.
3
Cynthia Vaughn and Martha Earl (pictured to the left and right respectively) will conduct numerous workshops throughout South Africa to help community librarians successfully navigate and access the wealth of quality online health resources. The workshops are patterned after those utilized in a successful study, called A Simple Plan Extended, in which Vaughn and Earl participated and taught librarians throughout the state of Tennessee about health information.
3
“I’m humbled and honored to have this opportunity,” said Vaughn, a clinical information librarian and assistant professor with UT Graduate School of Medicine. “Finding medical information is my passion and having the chance to share this knowledge with public librarians in South Africa is something I never dreamed possible.”
3
The National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) developed the classes Vaughn and Earl will teach during the trip. The schedule includes presentations to librarians in major cities such as Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria and Durban, as well as in the areas of KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.
3
“Wherever we go, whether rural or in urban Tennessee or South Africa, people want to learn about the most reliable sources for health information for themselves, their communities and their families,” said Earl, assistant director of Preston Medical Library and an assistant professor with UT Graduate School of Medicine. “Health information empowers consumers the world over.
UT Medical Center offers diagnostic services at Turkey Creek

The University of Tennessee Medical Center now offers diagnostic services in the Turkey Creek area as a convenient option for those in West Knoxville, Farragut, Hardin Valley, Lenoir City and the Northshore area. The new UT Medical Center, Turkey Creek Diagnostic Center, is located at 11440 Parkside Drive, Suite 204, in the Parkside Medical Plaza II building (across the street from Red Robin).
3
The facility offers same-day report turnarounds and provides services including CT scans, nuclear medicine and diagnostic x-rays. Of interest to many patients is how quickly they can be scheduled for appointments.
3
“The Turkey Creek location provides quick access to patients who need diagnostic services while offering the expertise, care and trust of the physicians and staff of UT Medical Center,” said Dr. J. Mark McKinney, Chair of the Department of Radiology at UT Medical Center and the UT Graduate School of Medicine. “Our patients have an extra peace of mind knowing the medical records are fully integrated through the UT Medical Center system. And they certainly like being able to get in and out fast to take care of their medical needs.”
3
Dr. McKinney said those near the Turkey Creek area can specifically ask their doctors to schedule tests and appointments for them at the UT Medical Center, Turkey Creek Diagnostic Center. Hours of operation at the facility are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
3

3

UT Graduate School of Medicine Opens Medical Simulation Center

The University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine Thursday opened a new medical simulation center that’s expected to enhance the quality of patient care and improve outcomes by advancing the medical skills of physicians and other healthcare professionals. Physicians and staff said the new facility stands alongside the nation’s best simulation centers for meeting the needs of practicing and aspiring medical professionals.
3
“Not only will the Center for Advanced Medical Simulation make a great contribution to our educational programs here, but it also will provide excellent opportunities for physicians and other healthcare professionals in the region to update their skills and meet newer requirements for certification,” said Dr. James J. Neutens, Dean of the UT Graduate School of Medicine. “Although the center revolves around providers of healthcare, the ultimate success story will be improved patient care and safety. We’re delighted to open the new simulation center.”
3
Neutens said that as the national model for physician and medical staff development evolves to include more of this type of training, the new center offers a setting for healthcare providers to improve individual skills and to practice team skills critical to patient safety. Complete with lifelike adult and newborn mannequins that mimic humans, simulated operating, intensive care and endovascular suites and a host of other advanced training devices for medical and dental procedures, the center is equipped to help clinicians improve their skills and decision-making capabilities.
3
“The new simulation center represents the changing paradigm in healthcare education and training,” said Dr. Leonard Hines, co-director of the UT Center for Advanced Medical Simulation and an assistant professor with the UT Graduate School of Medicine. “Similar to training in the aviation industry, medical simulation provides every member of the healthcare team the opportunity to learn and master skills and to become familiar with advancing technology in a safe, risk-free environment, before accepting the challenge of patient care. In promoting safer and higher quality healthcare, the center becomes a valuable asset to the region’s medical community and the patients served.”
3
The new center is 6,500 square feet, significantly larger than the 400-square-foot original simulation center that opened on the Knoxville campus of The University of Tennessee Medical Center in 2008. At $500-thousand, costs remained relatively low for the new facility as the medical center committed to using and renovating existing space for the simulation center. Already recognized as a regional asset for clinicians from a variety of hospitals and health systems in the Knoxville area, the newly renovated facility is expected to attract medical professionals from around the region and country for training.
3
“In addition to physicians, other healthcare providers such as nurses, therapists, physician assistants, EMTs and dentists learn techniques at the simulation center that can quickly be put into practice for their patients,” said Dr. Paul Huffstutter, co-director of the simulation center and an assistant professor with the UT Graduate School of Medicine. “Our physicians and staff provide significant hands-on training, but we also step back to observe and capture video recordings of procedures from a control room, with immediate debriefing and critiquing sessions afterward, to optimize student learning.”
3
In accordance with their roles at the region’s only academic medical center, staff members at the UT Center for Advanced Medical Simulation employ a model by which they continually study their own training and teaching techniques as well as how others best learn. As a result, they can continually modify their training modules and methods to help those they teach maximize what they’ve learned on behalf of their patients.
