Breastfeeding Support

Whether you are going back to work, have a premature or hospitalized baby, medical complications, are going on a trip or decided to pump breast milk exclusively, the Center for Women’s Health at the University of Tennessee Medical Center has made it easy and convenient to get the products you need by offering breast pumps, baby scales and a variety of accessories.

Why rent a breastpump?

A rental pump is a very high quality pump designed to establish your milk supply. This is the best type to use if you are pumping during the first month after delivery. Some insurance companies reimburse rental fees for pumps used for medical reasons such as breastfeeding difficulty or if your baby has to stay in the hospital due to prematurity or illness.

Using a previously owned, personal-use breast pump is not advised due to bacteria and viruses that may be transmitted. However, rental breast pumps are designed with special barriers and filters to prohibit milk from entering the pump motor to allow multiple users. When you rent a pump from the Center for Women’s Health, you will receive a new personal kit that includes everything needed to begin pumping.

Rental pumps are available seven days a week on the Mother-Baby Floor. Please call 305-9831 first to check availability.

What If I Need Help?

If you require assistance or have any questions or concerns, please call the Lactation Consultants at 305.9337. The Center for Women’s Health has certified lactation consultants available for patients during their hospital stay Monday through Friday during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Outpatient services are available by appointment.

Where do I rent the pump or scale?

First, call Lactation Services at 305-9337 to check availability. Breastpumps are rented 7 days a week and can be picked up on the Mother-Baby unit.

Baby scales can be rented through the lactation consultants.
