Medical Genetics Nutritional Services
Nutritional evaluation is available for patients of all ages. The goal is to help the client and his family to achieve adequate nutritional status when faced with a particular physical and/or environmental condition.
The nutritionist collects information as appropriate on growth pattern, feeding skills, behavioral patterns and specific daily food intake. Also considered before making recommendations are factors affecting prenatal and early postnatal growth as well as medical history, including medicines being taken and the client’s diagnosis.
Counseling is provided to the client and family on nutrient requirements and where changes need to be made in the reported diet to achieve dietary goals. Any considerations related to nutrient-drug interactions are discussed as well as any specific problems relating to nutrition that are a part of a handicapping condition. Referrals are made as appropriate to any community agency that may be of assistance in achieving nutritional goals.
Treatment of all individuals with either phenylketonuria (PKU) or galactosemia is by diet. The nutritionist provides dietary management for these inborn errors of metabolism.
Consultation is available upon request to other professions and agencies desiring information on the special nutritional needs of persons with developmental disorders or other “at-risk” conditions. When requested, programs can be presented at health fairs and professional in-service training sessions concerning follow-up for a positive newborn screen for PKU and galactosemia.
