The debate on coconut...

 

Some people argue that coconut is not a healthy choice in your diet, but others would say it has its benefits when eaten in moderation. Below is the good and bad of coconut in your diet.

 

Pros

  • Pure unsweetened coconut is low in carbohydrate & a good source of fiber.
  • Half of the fat in coconut is medium-chain fatty acids which is easier to process by our bodies.
  • Around the world coconut has been a diet staple for centuries in areas without increased rates of heart disease

Cons

  • Coconut is high in fat and saturated fat.
  • There have been no well designed studies to prove the saturated fat in coconut acts differently than animal fat.
  • The FDA has not substantiated health claims such as improved immunity and weight loss with coconut oils.

 

Bottom line: enjoy in moderation like any other high fat choice.
