Cardiac Valve Disease

According to the American Heart Association, approximately 5 million Americans are diagnosed with cardiac valve disease each year. Cardiac valve disease, also known as mitral valve disease or aortic valve disease, occurs when blood flow through the heart’s four valves is partially blocked or leaks back in the opposite direction. These valves may develop incorrectly before birth or can be damaged by certain diseases later in life. Symptoms of cardiac valve disease include breathing difficulties, weakness and dizziness, chest discomfort, pounding of the heart, swelling and weight gain. Medical and sometimes surgical treatment may be necessary.
