Stroke Risk

When it comes to your health, nothing is more important than knowledge and understanding. The following Health Break from the University of Tennessee Medical Center contains information that can help you and your family live longer, healthier lives.

Stroke is a general term referring to any disturbance of the blood supply to the brain resulting in symptoms of brain dysfunction. It is currently the third leading cause of death in the United States, killing more than 163,000 people each year. Though there are several stroke risk factors such as age, race, history of diabetes and even previous stroke, that cannot be changed or controlled, there are many others that can be. Taking preventive measures such as lowering your blood pressure and lowering your cholesterol; changing your diet; and quitting smoking can significantly decrease your chance of suffering a stroke.
