Citizens need basic training in Bleeding Control principles so they are able to provide immediate, frontline aid until first responders are able to take over care of an injured person. Due to many situations, there may be a delay between the time of injury and the time a first responder is on the scene. Without civilian intervention in these circumstances, preventable deaths will occur.
The “Stop the Bleed”; is a 2 hour course designed to teach recognition of life-threatening bleeding and ways to stop it. The course includes a PowerPoint presentation on recognizing bleeding that is life-threatening as well as hands-on skills training in applying direct pressure to wounds, wound packing and tourniquet application. No prior medical knowledge or training is necessary to take the course. The course is designed as a one-time certification to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills to help save a life. The course is designed for all age groups.
Courses will be held at UT Medical Center Heart Hospital Conference Room.
The importance of this course is paramount for all individuals. Tragedies can happen at any time. This course will provide the basic knowledge and skills to “do something” in that situation. In October 2015 the White House included the “Stop the Bleed” campaign as part of Presidential Policy Directive 8 – National Preparedness which addresses building national resilience through public awareness, education and training.
