Medical Oncology

A comprehensive, coordinated and compassionate, multidisciplinary team approach to medical oncology care.

Medical Oncology

Overview

The Medical Oncology Program at the University of Tennessee Medical Center provides inpatient, outpatient and consultative services for the treatment of solid tumors and malignant hematologic conditions such as leukemia and lymphoma. Our multidisciplinary team involves board certified cancer specialists, nurses, pharmacists and support staff that coordinate individualized care plans for patients with cancer and blood disorders.

A medical oncologist is a physician who specializes in the medical treatment of cancer with chemotherapy as well as biological and hormonal therapy. Medical oncology services are available at the main Cancer Institute location, as well as satellite office locations in the Knoxville and surrounding counties of Blount, Sevier, and Loudon for the convenience of our patients.

Your Care at the Cancer Institute

The Cancer Institute at The University of Tennessee Medical Center offers the broadest spectrum of cancer specialists trained at some of the top institutions in the country to diagnose, evaluate and treat a wide range of cancers. Our team provides patients access to all of their cancer care including surgical consultations, genetic counseling/testing, chemotherapy infusions, and supportive/integrative health services.

Our team looks at the person as a whole and designs a medical care plan to meet their needs. Several key factors, such as the type and stage of the cancer, as well as age, health, and lifestyle are considered when determining each treatment plan which may include:

Patients are reviewed at multidisciplinary conferences where surgeons, medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, genetic counselors, nurses and clinical trials coordinators gather to determine the best individualized treatment plan for each patient. This level of coordination ensures that patients are receiving the highest level of care, offering the best outcomes and quality of life. Our comprehensive care teams also include integrative healthcare, a registered dietitian, financial counselors, pastoral care, palliative care, and a social worker.

Clinical Trials
