Seminar: Supporting Successful Breastfeeding

Mom holding babyThe University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC) and the Knox County Health Department (KCHD) will host a seminar for health care providers on how to better support and increase rates of breastfeeding in new mothers. Supporting Successful Breastfeeding During Pregnancy will be held on Friday, August 18 from 8:30 – 11 a.m. at the medical center’s Wood Auditorium.

Speakers for the seminar include UT Medical Center OB-GYN, Paige Johnson, MD, and Hollie Raynor, PhD, registered dietitian and professor in the University of Tennessee’s Department of Nutrition.

The seminar is made possible by a competitive Tennessee Department of Health grant the KCHD obtained to help combat diabetes and obesity-related illness, which includes increasing breastfeeding rates. Breastfeeding offers many benefits to babies and their mothers. Breastfed babies are less like to develop numerous conditions including infections, diabetes and obesity. Mothers who breastfeed have a lower risk of diabetes and certain cancers.
