The Region's only Kidney Transplant Program

UT Medical Center’s Center for Transplant Services is home to the only kidney transplant program in East Tennessee and has performed approximately 1,050 transplants since 1985, with the first successful kidney transplant (sister to brother) performed on Feb. 28, 1985.

For the last 28 years, the medical center has provided pre-transplant evaluation, treatment and post-transplant follow up care to patients approaching or at End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

Although not considered a cure for patients with ESRD, kidney transplant is considered a preferable alternative to long term dialysis for many patients. The latest statistics suggests that people with chronic kidney disease who choose to have a kidney transplant may live longer than if they had chosen to treat their disease with dialysis alone.

The two leading causes of chronic kidney disease are high blood pressure and diabetes. Our program offers patients with type I diabetes the opportunity for pancreas transplant.  A combined kidney-pancreas transplants provides many Type I diabetics with kidney failure, a life-improving option as compared to daily insulin injections and dialysis therapy. Kidney-pancreas transplantation, though not considered a cure, can greatly improve the length and quality of life for many transplant patients. The Center for Transplant Services provides kidney, pancreas, and simultaneous kidney-pancreas transplant services.

In November 2010, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded The University of Tennessee Medical Center with the National Medal of Honor for Organ Donation and awarded the Center for Transplant Services the Bronze Award for meeting and exceeding HRSA Standards for Kidney Graft Survival, Transplant Rates and Wait list Mortality Rates.
