Center for Transplant Services

The Region's only Kidney Transplant Program

UT Medical Center’s Center for Transplant Services is home to the only kidney transplant program in East Tennessee and has performed approximately 1,300 transplants since 1985, with the first successful kidney transplant (sister to brother) performed on Feb. 28, 1985.

Since 1985 the medical center has provided pre-transplant evaluation, treatment and post-transplant follow up care to patients approaching or at End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

Although not considered a cure for patients with ESRD, kidney transplant is considered a preferable alternative to long term dialysis for many patients. The latest statistics suggests that people with chronic kidney disease who choose to have a kidney transplant may live longer than if they had chosen to treat their disease with dialysis alone.

The two leading causes of chronic kidney disease are high blood pressure and diabetes. Our program offers patients with type I diabetes the opportunity for pancreas transplant.
