History and AccreditationIn 1985, The University of Tennessee Medical Center realized the need to provide more Spiritual care for it’s patients, families, and staff.

The Reverend George Doebler was hired to create a Pastoral Care Department, and in 1987, Reverend Peter Keese came to establish and supervise the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) training program. As the result of Reverend Doebler’s vision, the Department of Pastoral Care now includes 8 staff Chaplains, as well as a number of CPE residents, interns, and externs. Over 300 students have completed CPE training here. Our Pastoral Care staff is fully integrated into the Medical Center setting and serve as members of the healthcare team.
