Dr. Ryan Unger is a busy family practice physician born and raised in South Knoxville and continues practicing in Knoxville, TN. He began his interests in medicine as a competitive soccer player and personal trainer in high school. As a collegiate athlete he was exposed to and received benefit from learning the importance of health and wellness, diet and lifestyle to performing as a student athlete. While completing his studies in biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology at University of TN, Knoxville, he worked as a research assistant for the department of anesthesiology studying platelets. During his time in research and undergraduate studies, he also worked as a Certified Nurse Assistant in trauma and critical care at UT Medical Center. He completed his professional training at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, followed by clinicals in selected excellent academic medical centers around the United States completing his residency in family medicine at the University of Tennessee Medical Center where he serves as a certified wound care and hyperbaric oxygen physician. He remains busy in medicine and the primary care management of acute and chronic medical conditions and their comorbidities as well as health and wellness and preventive care. Dr. Unger believes in active collaboration, education, and shared decision making between a patient and their practitioners. He knows that this takes time and a mutual understanding between the patient and provider to deliver the best of care. As a husband and father of four, he values quality patient care for the entire family. When not practicing medicine, he enjoys spending time with his family, and the outdoors whether at the soccer field or in the mountains, lake or rivers of East Tennessee.
