About Us
The Breast Health Outreach Program is a unique grant-funded program providing essential breast health services in East Tennessee.
Our mobile mammography unit (MMU) provides easy access to screening mammograms for women across our region. The mobile unit operates six days a week, offering screening services to both insured and uninsured women.
In 2020, a new mobile unit replaced one purchased in 2004. It is the third MMU since the medical center began offering these services in 1989.
Providing screenings where women work, live and worship removes barriers that often prevent women from being screened. Those barriers can include getting time off from work, finding childcare and getting transportation. The MMU supports the medical center’s outreach goals by providing access to life-saving breast cancer screenings in 21 East Tennessee counties.

Free Breast Health Classes
The Breast Health Outreach program offers free breast health classes. You can find them at convenient locations in 21 East Tennessee counties. We can hold them on-site at businesses, churches and other gathering places. Classes focus on the importance of early detection including:
- Screening guidelines
- Warning signs of breast cancer
- Proper technique for breast self-exam using MammaCare Breast Models
Our History
The University of Tennessee Medical Center began offering mobile mammography services in the late 1980s to women who may not otherwise have access. The mobile mammography unit features a mammography suite equipped with digital mammography equipment. The unit proudly displays the Medical Center’s colors (orange and white), and travels the roads of East Tennessee providing women access to mammography services in their community.
