The Emergency and Trauma Center at The University of Tennessee Medical Center offers educational opportunities for health care providers around the country, through a variety of national organizations. The center also provides classes for the public.
ATLS – Advanced Trauma Life Support
The Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) program can teach you a systematic, concise approach to the care of a trauma patient. ATLS was developed by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma and was first introduced in the United States and abroad in 1980. Its courses provide you with a safe and reliable method for immediate management of injured patients. The course teaches you how to assess a patient’s condition, resuscitate and stabilize him or her, and determine if his or her needs exceed a facility’s capacity. It also covers how to arrange for a patient’s inter-hospital transfer and assure that optimum care is provided throughout the process. If you don’t treat trauma patients frequently, an ATLS course provides an easy method to remember for evaluation and treatment of a trauma victim.

FCCS – Fundamental Critical Care Support
As part of its mission to ensure the highest quality care for critically ill and injured patients, the Society of Critical Care Medicine assists in the preparation of future intensivists and other health care providers. Fundamental Critical Care Support training prepares non-intensivists to manage critically ill patients for the first 24 hours until transfer or appropriate critical care consultation can be arranged. The course and its companion text assist the non-intensivist in dealing with the sudden deterioration of critically ill patients and prepares house staff and nurses for ICU coverage. The course is often used to prepare residents for rotations in the ICU.

TNCC – Trauma Nursing Core Course
ENA developed and implemented the Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) for national and international dissemination as a means of identifying a standardized body of trauma nursing knowledge. The TNCC (Provider) is a two-day course designed to provide the learner with cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills. The purpose of TNCC is to present core-level knowledge, refine skills and build a firm foundation in trauma nursing. TNCC, widely recognized as the premier course for hospitals and trauma centers worldwide, empowers nurses with the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and hands-on training to provide expert care for trauma patients.

ATCN – Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses
Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN) is an advanced course designed for the registered nurse interested in increasing his/her knowledge in management of the multiple trauma patient. The ATCN course is taught concurrently with ATLS. The ATCN program has been operational for over 15 years and has an excellent record of offering a superb trauma educational program, and maintaining a positive collaboration with the ACS Committee on Trauma State Chapters. The ATCN program is currently being offered in numerous states as well as internationally.

RTTDC – Rural Trauma Team Development Course
The Rural Trauma Team Development Course (RTTDC) emphasizes a team approach to the initial evaluation and resuscitation of the trauma patient at a rural facility. With more than 60 percent of the country’s trauma deaths occurring in rural areas, the course assists health care professionals in determining the need to transfer the patient to a higher level of care. The one-day course includes interactive lectures on both medical procedures and communication strategies and three team performance scenarios. Developed by the Rural Trauma Committee of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT), RTTDC is based on the concept that in most situations, rural facilities can form a trauma team consisting of at least three core members. The course is offered in a single day or modular format.

Stop the Bleed
During a crisis, no matter how quickly professional emergency responders arrive, bystanders will always be first on the scene. This class will teach you how to take simple actions immediately to help save a life.
