Clinical Social Worker: provides emotional support to patients and their families, helping them cope with the challenges of a progressive, terminal illness. We can also assist with practical needs, such as connecting patients to resources, coordinating care, and navigating insurance and financial concerns.
Pharmacist: Clinical Pharmacist who works closely with ALS patients and their families to assist with questions, medication access and optimize care.
DME Specialist: Specialist in complex rehab technology / durable medical equipment, helping clients find equipment solutions to mobility and ADL problems related to ALS
Physical Therapist: Assess patients' changes in lower extremity strength, mobility, and ambulation and provide them with what they need to be as comfortable and independent as possible. We also strive to anticipate future needs so that patients will be prepared and provide support for caregivers so that they will be ready to best assist the patient in their journey.
ALS Representative: Connect people living with ALS, caregivers, and families to Chapter Care Services programs and community resources. Act as a patient advocate to help people living with ALS, caregivers, and families obtain equipment, services and care to improve quality of life.
Dietitian: The role of the registered dietitian (RD) in ALS care is to assess nutritional needs and recommend changes in the diet to assist in meeting those needs. This includes choosing the right foods with the appropriate consistencies. The RD plays a role in preventing or treating malnutrition, offering strategies to prevent weight loss, and recommending alternate forms of nutrition.
Occupational Therapist: Occupational therapy helps empower clients to participate in activities they want to continue doing by providing resources and strategies. Activities can include morning routines, bathing, feeding oneself, moving around home or community, and helping support their hobbies
Respiratory Therapist: A respiratory therapist assists with the pulmonary function testing in the ALS clinic. They also help educate patients about their pulmonary function studies and provide information for respiratory assist devices that can help you breathe a little easier.
Speech Therapist: Speech-language pathologist (SLP) play a vital role in assessing and managing communication and swallowing difficulties that arise as the disease progresses. They work closely with the patient to develop strategies for speech clarity, augmentative communication methods, and safe swallowing techniques to maintain quality of life. Additionally, SLPs provide counseling and support to patients and their families as they navigate these challenges.
The ALS Association works to discover treatments and a cure for ALS, and to serve, advocate for, and empower people affected by ALS to live their lives to the fullest.
