Integrative Sleep Medicine Program

Overview

UT Sleep Disorders Center now offers a comprehensive program of Integrative Sleep Medicine services to better serve the sleep problems of East Tennesseans. We are dedicated to the improvement of your sleep and waking quality of life. We offer comprehensive, integrative, holistic approaches to the evaluation and treatment of all sleep disorders.

We offer a range of treatment options that combine state of the art allopathic sleep medicine with many different types of complementary sleep medicine. The approach is tailored to the individual. Each person has a unique set of circumstances and therefore the most effective approach is individualized. Often patients are best treated when more than one modality is used. This results in better outcomes and promotes wellness.

Component Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is a program that helps you identify thoughts and behaviors that cause or worsen sleep problems. You develop the skills that promote sound sleep. CBT-I helps you overcome the underlying causes of your sleep problems.

Biofeedback is a very effective approach for stress related problems. This includes insomnia. You will learn to control your body’s responses to stress and improve your ability to relax. We use the emWave2 by HeartMath as well as other modalities such as skin temperature.

Exercise can help with many sleep problems. This includes sleep apnea as well as insomnia. People with RLS also achieve some benefit from exercise.

Nutrition can be a major factor in sleep. This includes timing of meals, dietary choices, and calories consumed. Nutritional counseling combined with exercise can be very beneficial in weight reduction and maintenance.

Relaxation is very helpful in treating insomnia. This includes Yoga, Qigong, and meditation.
