Leave Your Wrinkles in the Past with Botox

For many people, Botox injections have proved to be a positive “game-changer.” Whether used for cosmetic or medical purposes, Botox has increased the quality of life for thousands of Americans. In addition, patient “satisfaction ratings” for Botox injections are impressive, with more than 90% of patients reporting they were satisfied with their results.

Aesthetic providers like University Aesthetic Plastic Surgery at University of Tennessee Medical Center, use Botox to address various cosmetic and medical goals. Botox treats the underlying cause of wrinkles when injected into the face by relaxing the muscles that cause them.

How does Botox work?

Derived from a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum, Botox is safe and effective in blocking selected nerves from receiving chemical signals. Botox injections temporarily block selected muscles from moving, which can have significant cosmetic and medical benefits, from reducing wrinkles to preventing hyperhidrosis (significant underarm sweating). The effects of Botox are temporary, and regular treatments are often necessary to achieve optimal results.

Benefits of Botox

Botox can lessen and smooth wrinkles by blocking facial muscle contractions. This muscle-blocking effect also can have medical applications. Botox injections can often help ease back and neck pain, uncontrolled eyelid blinking, “lazy eye,” and some forms of urinary and bladder incontinence.

Botox is also frequently effective in preventing or reducing migraine headaches and is sometimes used to reduce excessive underarm sweating. Remember, Botox injections should never be administered by anyone other than a highly-trained medical professional like the ones at Wilson Cosmetic Plastic Surgery.

Am I a good candidate for Botox injections?

You may not qualify for Botox injections if you have a breathing disorder, difficulty swallowing, or any condition that may cause excessive bleeding. Patients with myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome are discouraged from seeking Botox treatment.

If you are a candidate for Botox injections, you’ll need to provide your full medical history and let your doctor know if you have received previous Botox treatment. Your doctor may direct you to suspend the use of any blood-thinning medications or supplements for a specified period before and after your injections.

Botox injection procedure

Your treatment will typically take place in your doctor’s office. Using a thin needle, your doctor will inject minimal amounts of Botox into targeted areas of your skin or muscles. You may treat multiple areas in a single session. The injections are not painful, but your doctor will likely numb your skin before your procedure. It’s important to remember not to rub your treated areas for at least 24 hours following your injections.

Botox results

It usually takes between one and three days for your Botox injections to begin to “work.” As your muscles relax and become immobilized, you will notice a reduction or elimination of wrinkles and a “smoothing and relaxing” effect on your face. The benefits of Botox are not permanent. To maintain your results, you will need regular follow-up injections, separated by at least three months.

Dysport and Jeuveau

While Botox is undoubtedly the most well-known name in cosmetic botulinum toxin products, a handful of comparable products have arrived on the market in recent years to provide consumers with various options for treating dynamic wrinkles. Two of these products are Dysport and Jeuveau. Dysport and Jeuveau, like Botox, reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles by inhibiting muscle contractions in target areas. However, specific characteristics may make one product a superior choice for some patients.

While Botox offers more precise treatment, the ability of Dysport to spread further beneath the skin allows it to treat broader areas more efficiently. Speaking of efficiency, Dysport has also been shown to produce slightly longer-lasting results, requiring fewer treatments to maintain results. Furthermore, Dysport’s results appear as quickly as 24 hours after treatment.

Jeuveau also has its unique advantages. Jeuveau’s ingredients, applications, and results are very similar to Botox. However, its formulation is slightly different. It uses an advanced purification process (“Hi-Pure” technology) that may offer an increased sense of comfort for patients new to botulinum toxin injections.
