In 1988, Dr. Bell was recruited by the Department of Surgery to develop a Division of Surgical Oncology and an oncology program at the University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC). Dr. Bell currently serves as Director of the Cancer Institute at the UTMC, a Professor in the Department of Surgery and a Surgical Oncologist with University Surgical Oncology.
