University Aesthetic Plastic Surgery - Breast Augmentation

Deciding on your breast augmentation is one of the most important decisions you will make. Your choice of doctors is the key to the success of your breast augmentation surgery.

What is breast augmentation surgery?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that gives you the option of changing the size, shape, and “feel” of your breasts. Breast augmentation or breast enhancement has been the #1 cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States for the last ten years. Dr. Wilson is considered one of the best plastic surgeons in the country and is well known for his performing breast surgery. For many years Dr. Wilson has been the leader in the Southwest area for the number of breast augmentations performed each year. He is now in Knoxville, TN.

Breast Augmentation can:

  • Correct asymmetry of the breasts
  • Improve the balance of your figure
  • Enhance your self-image and self-confidence
  • Correct a loss of breast volume after pregnancy
  • Increase fullness and projection of your breasts
  • Create perkier breasts and a better shape after pregnancy

Perfect breast size is a very individual thing, and your breast augmentation surgery is planned just for you and just you. Dr. Wilson will listen to your desires, take measurements, and suggest a size that fits your body’s form. You can then select larger or smaller implant sizes depending on your desired result. The choice is yours.

Types of Breast Implants

Although we often think of breast size in terms of cup size, it is far more important to “look right.” The importance of matching the right size implant for your frame, waist, and hips helps create balance, proportion, and contour and is what plastic surgery is all about. You should get what you want.

“This is YOUR breast augmentation, and the right implant will give you YOUR perfect result.”

If the breasts are saggy, a breast lift may be needed to achieve the correct breast shape. If implants have already been placed, then the patient should seek implant exchange. Finding the right size, width and projection for your specific body is crucial to you feeling comfortable and happy.

Both Saline breast implants and silicone breast implants are offered. Allergan Natrelle® Cohesive gel breast implants are available. These are approved by the FDA.

Depending on an individual’s breast shape, implants may be placed using the biplanar technique (under the pectoralis major muscle) or subglandular (over the muscle but under natural breast tissue).

Different Methods of performing breast augmentation surgery

Breast Augmentation with saline implants can be easily placed through all three incisions. The implant is placed deflated into the carefully created pocket, then filled with saline once in place. Silicone gel implants are already filled to a specified size, making it difficult to place through an underarm incision. Therefore it is recommended placement through the under breast or nipple incision. Dr. Wilson uses a Keller Funnel to deliver the implant with less incisional trauma and a “no-touch” technique.

The decisions of implant type, size, incision, and position can be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Wilson. Our offices are at The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, TN.

Other common names for this procedure are breast enhancement, augmentation mammoplasty, boob job, or breast job.

The surgery takes just over one hour to perform. General anesthesia is recommended. Recovery is between 24-48 hours, with some soreness for three to five days. You can return to work in three to five days, with most patients returning to full activity in two weeks.

Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery?

FDA regulations suggest that women be at least 18 years of age to receive saline-filled implants and at least 22 years old to get silicone implants. Women who opt for silicone gel implants should get an MRI exam three years after surgery, and every two years after that, to check that the implant is intact and well-positioned. Breast augmentation surgery may make it more challenging to get a mammogram, and different views may be needed to image all breast tissue. Placement of the implant through the nipple incision can, in some cases, interfere with breastfeeding. Remember that augmentation does not correct significantly drooping breasts, a condition that may require a “breast lift” procedure.

Preparing for your breast augmentation surgery

You will need to provide your doctor with your complete medical history, including all previous surgeries. You will likely need to have some pre-surgical lab work done and provide a list of all medications and supplements you are taking. For several weeks before your surgery, your doctor will likely direct you to stop taking any medications (such as aspirin) that can promote excessive bleeding. A “baseline” pre-surgical mammogram may be ordered both to confirm your breast health and to provide a means of comparison following your procedure.

Your procedure

Breast augmentation surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia to ensure you remain pain-free during the operation. The procedure usually takes between one and two hours. Your surgeon will make incisions either under your breasts, under your arms, or around your nipples. The determination about your incisions is made based on your body type, the kind of implant you have chosen, and the extent of the augmentation you desire.

After the type of implants you and your doctor have selected have been properly placed and aligned, your surgeon will close your incisions using sutures and surgical tape. Gauze dressings will also be applied to your breasts. Breast augmentation surgery is most often performed as an outpatient procedure, but occasionally an overnight stay may be recommended.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

You’ll need some “downtime” of at least a few days. Make sure you have some help at home. While over-the-counter medications should control most of your discomfort, your doctor will prescribe any additional pain relievers as appropriate. You will probably have some temporary swelling around your breast incisions. You may need to wear a surgical bra for up to several weeks. You and your doctor will schedule a series of follow-up appointments to make sure you are healing correctly and achieving your desired results.

Breast Augmentation Results

While changes in the size and shape of your breasts will be immediately noticeable, it may be weeks or months before you enjoy the full appearance benefits of your breast augmentation surgery. Be prepared to make “happy adjustments” in your wardrobe!

FAQs

All surgeries come with risks, including but not limited to infection, scarring, poor wound healing, complications from anesthesia, and allergic reactions to medication and equipment. Side effects specific to breast augmentation surgery include breast pain and changes in nipple and breast sensation.

The price of your breast augmentation will vary from patient to patient, depending on the extent of the procedure performed and the location of the surgery center used. If your surgery was performed purely for cosmetic reasons, your medical insurance would not pay for it.
